PROJECT OVERVIEW

MCWB Architects completed an Exterior Restoration Plan for Pavilion X and the two adjoining student rooms. The plan included a brief history of the building, an in-depth analysis of Jefferson’s calculations and built conditions, a survey, and recommendations for restoration.

RESEARCH & DOCUMENTATION

The research and reports uncovered that Pavilion X closely matched Jefferson’s final dimensions, making it possible to accurately reconstruct the missing parapet located on the roof. Original features, such as portions of the serrated roofs under later gabled roofs and parts of the Chinese rail along the portico, were also discovered to be intact.
MCWB then created a plan to restore key features of the pavilion such as the attic parapet, student room serrated roofs and Chinese rails, front columns, and doors.

CONSTRUCTION

The work on Pavilion X included:
  • Introduction of all new building systems installed to minimize disturbance to original fabric, including new MEP, security and data systems
  • Localized underpinning to allow for installation of sub-grade ductwork
  • Reinstatement and repair of missing wood doors, architraves, baseboards, chimney pieces, cornices and other elements Plaster repair and replacement
  • Reinstatement of roof parapet, column restoration, repair and stucco work
  • Reinstatement of Jefferson period student room roofs and railings
  • Repair of all wood windows and doors, introduction of some new windows where originals were missing
  • Brick repair, stabilization and reconstruction in selected areas
  • Reconstruction of exterior steps, stairs and other similar features

RESTORATION

Pavilion X was successfully restored to its original grandeur, preserving not only the legacy of the building but also strengthening the University of Virginia’s ability to inspire and educate future generations.
