Built in 1924 as a tribute to the 2,700 University of Virginia students and alumni who lost their lives in World War I, Memorial Gymnasium stands as a powerful symbol of remembrance and community. Designed through a collaboration between architects Kimball, Blair, Peebles, and Taylor, the building showcases timeless architectural craftsmanship. In 2004, it was honored with listings on both the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places. Today, Memorial Gymnasium continues to serve the UVA community as the home of the university’s varsity volleyball and wrestling teams.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
This project provides design and construction administration services for the UVA Memorial Gymnasium Infrastructure and Accessibility Renewal. It addresses MEPFP system upgrades, accessibility improvements, window restoration, and the transformation of underutilized spaces into classrooms, restrooms, a new egress stair, and athletics storage. Enhancements also include ADA-compliant entrances with a new ramp system and an updated Emmet Street sidewalk, improving accessibility and usability of the main gymnasium.
