HISTORICAL LEGACY

Designed by the renowned architect, H.H. Richardson, The New York State Senate Chamber opened on March 10, 1881, and seats 63 senate members. The broad hallways surrounding the chamber provide access to the gallery and floor from all sides. These spaces were beautifully designed and remain as they were originally intended.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

MCWB was retained by the state to restore the Senate Chamber and surrounding spaces. Work on this project spanned over a period of several years and included modernizing outdated systems, stone and woodworking cleaning along with interior finishing.

RESEARCH & DOCUMENTATION

A historic structure report was executed to establish all the details of Richardson’s original work and guided the restoration project. The report traced subsequent modifications, surveyed heating and air conditioning systems, as well as lighting, electrical and acoustic requirements.

SCHEMATIC DESIGN

Designs were developed for the lost decorative elements such as:
  • Axminster carpet
  • Brass lighting fixtures
  • Doors and door hardware
  • Reporters’ and visitors’ chairs
  • Public seating in the galleries
  • Embossed leather and gilded wall coverings
  • Leather upholstery
  • Encaustic tile paving

RESTORATION

MCWB carefully cleaned and restored the original stone and woodwork, bringing back the intricate details of H.H. Richardson’s design. Lost decorative elements were faithfully recreated, including the richly patterned Axminster carpet, embossed leather and gilded wall coverings, and intricately designed brass lighting fixtures. Modern systems were seamlessly upgraded without compromising the space and its historic character.

Every project tells a story—crafted with care, shaped by history, and built to inspire for generations.
