Hampden-Sydney College: Carpenter Dorms

HISTORIC LEGACY

Designed by Calloway Johnson Moore, PA Architecture and completed in 1990, the Carpenter Dormitories consist of three masonry buildings with slate roofs. The complex houses a total of 185 student beds. Arranged around a central core of shared bathrooms, each building features internal hallways and double-occupancy rooms along the perimeter. The dorms had seen minimal updates since their original construction.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

While the Carpenter Dormitories were designed for space efficiency, the interior lacked natural light, creating a cold and undesirable environment for students. MCWB conducted extensive research of existing conditions and worked closely with the college to identify areas for improvement.

REALIZATION

MCWB provided detailed reports and design services for Carpenter Dorm X & Y to upgrade building systems including:
  • New HVAC system with individual climate-controlled rooms with dedicated outside fresh air
  • New LED lighting
  • Complete bathroom renovations
  • Roof repairs
  • New windows
  • Fresh paint
  • ADA accessibility to Carpenter Y
  • 1st floor accessibility to Carpenter X & Y
Additionally, a lounge in Carpenter Y was re-envisioned and converted into an upgraded apartment, creating more living space for students.
