HISTORIC LEGACY

Bacon’s Castle is the oldest documented brick dwelling in the United States and is a rare example of High Jacobean architecture. Built in 1665, with an addition constructed in 1854, the site also includes a 17th century English formal garden and several outbuildings spanning four centuries of unique history.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Work began with MCWB conducting an existing conditions survey to develop a clear scope of work. Following digital documentation, MCWB assisted Preservation Virginia in applying for grant funding, including the Saving America’s Treasures Grant and the VA 250 Grant. MCWB then developed construction documents to complete the restoration project in two phases, to include:

PHASE I

    • Underpinning and stabilization of the 1665 west chimney.
    • Exterior wall stabilization and masonry repairs on the 1854 addition.
    • Reinforcement of the original summer beam in the Great Hall.
    • Installation of a new fire suppression system throughout the Castle and addition.
    • Installation of a sub-surface drainage system at the perimeter of the Castle.

PHASE II

    • Installation of a new flat seam metal roof on the 1854 addition and hyphen.
    • Installation of new gutters and downspouts at the 1854 addition and hyphen.
    • Installation of new lime stucco on the two 1854 chimneys.
    • Installation of low-profile ventilated chimney caps on the two 1665 chimneys and 1854 chimneys.
