Although there are many architectural jewels in Newport, Rhode Island; the Newport Country Club both physically and conceptually stands apart from all others on the island. Standing majestically above the windswept sculpted landscape of southern Newport, the newly restored building is considered to be one of Newport’s finest architectural achievements. Upon its completion in 1893, it stood as the first building specifically designed as a country club in America, and its success propelled Whitney Warren; the young architect, to architectural prominence, culminating in his greatest work; New York’s Grand Central Terminal. The Newport Country Club was designed for the upper echelons of Newport’s elite, and it continues to serve that purpose today.
