New England Farmhouse
Location: Western Massachusetts
Period: Late 18th Century

The New England farmhouse is a late 18th century saltbox on a beautiful hillside overlooking a scenic valley in the heart of the Berkshires of western Massachusetts. MCWB was commissioned to restore the house and to provide a sympathetic addition that doubled the square footage without overwhelming the scale of the original house. This was achieved by designing a one-story link that housed the kitchen, with a story-and-a-half bedroom and service wing beyond. This progression of massing minimized the impact of the overall square footage of the addition. The addition is constructed with similar materials as the historic farmhouse, while not slavishly mimicking its detailing.
The house had been vacant and significantly deteriorated to start. All original fabric of the historic building was carefully repaired and restored including wood paneling, doors, hardware, flooring, and fireplaces.
