Originally built in 1870, this four-story Manhattan townhouse sits in the heart of the Upper East Side. MCWB was tasked with a comprehensive restoration and renovation, preserving the home’s historic character while enhancing its functionality. The project included a full exterior and interior restoration, along with the addition of a carefully designed rear extension.
DESIGN
Respecting the townhouse’s historic significance, the exterior restoration plan focused on revitalizing the façade, upgrading masonry, restoring windows, and adding new railings at the front entrance. The rear addition posed a unique design challenge, requiring careful coordination with the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. Multiple design iterations and models were developed to ensure the addition complemented the original structure while meeting preservation standards.
REALIZATION
The transformation began with exterior restoration before moving seamlessly into the interior. Every level of the home, from the newly excavated basement—where headspace was increased by six feet—to the top floor, underwent meticulous updates. A striking new elliptical staircase now winds through the home, unifying the space. Updated systems, refined finishes, and custom interior details bring new life to each room while honoring the building’s historic roots.
